First Monday in October is Here and First Amendment on the Docket at the US Supreme Court

The First Amendment is the first order of business of the US Supreme Court on Monday. The court the take up the issue of protests at military funerals. This involves the infamous Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka,KA which demonstrates at funerals of fallen US military claiming the death are a punishment by God because the US tolerates Homosexuality. Congress Approved a law to prohibit the protests. The ACLU in behalf of the Westboro Baptist and it founder Fred Phelps sued because the law violates the first Amendment.

The Second Case involves banning the sale of violent video games in California.

Monday, will present the third woman on the US Supreme Court, Elena Kagan. Kagan was White House Counsel to President Obama. Kagan joins other liberal Woman court justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor. Sotomayor was President Obama’s first Supreme Court justice nominee.
