Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens To Retire in June; President Obama to Announce Replacement Soon, GOP Vows a Fight

Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens,89 the fourth longest-serving member of the US Supreme Court announce his retirement. In a letter to President Obama, Justice Stevens will leave the bench on the last day of  court session. Justice Stevens was appointed by President Gerald R. Ford in 1975.  On the court the was the senior member and the liberal lion of the institution.

President Obama said he will move quickly to replace the Supreme Court’s liberal leader and longest-serving member with someone who shares the belief that “powerful interests must not be allowed to drown out the voices of ordinary citizens.”
