Sunday night President Obama made a deal over the weekend with what was formerly known as “Pro-Life” Democrats led by Rep. Bart Stupak(D-Nancy Pelosi) to give the President a victory to pass ObamaCare.
The bill passed 219-212 with no Republican support. 34 Democrats opposed the bill.
The president’s staff wrote an Executive Order that would allegedly restore the Hyde Amendment. But legal minds say that an executive order does not trump settled law.
The bill now forces Americans to buy health insurance or face stiff fines. The bill now provides subsidies to families to buy health insurance they must not earn more than $88,000 to qualify.
The bill also states there no life time limits, and patients cannot be banned if they have a pre-existing health condition such has diabetes, high blood pressure, blindness, etc.
Reaction is swift Democrats are victorious and Republicans deflated and defeated when the votes were tallied.
“We will be joining those who established Social Security, Medicare and now, tonight, health care for all Americans, said Speaker Nancy Pelosi, partner to Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., in the grueling campaign to pass the legislation.
“This is the civil rights act of the 21st century,” added Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, the top-ranking black member of the House.
Republicans readily agreed the bill would affect everyone in America, but warned repeatedly of the burden imposed by more than $900 billion in tax increases and Medicare cuts combined.
“We have failed to listen to America,” said Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, leader of a party that has vowed to carry the fight into the fall’s midterm elections for control of Congress.
President Obama is expected to sign the measure on Tuesday.
There will be challenges to the constitutionality of the legislation.
