July 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Pioneering TV newsman(read Anchor) Walter Cronkite has Died. Cronkite died at his New York City home he was 92. Cronkite created the template of the Network Newsman and Anchor, knowledgeable, authoritative, telling it like it is style which is sorely missing today.

Cronkite covered the major news and events of the mid twentieth century including The end of Great Depression,  World War II,  The Korean War;  The assassinations of President John F. Kennedy,   and his brother Former Attorney General and Presidential Candidate Robert F. Kennedy,Civil Rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X in addition Attempted Assassinations both of Presidents Gerald R. Ford and Ronald W. Reagan.

The Vietnam War( he called a morass , which led to President Lyndon B. Johnson not to run for a second full term in 1968).He reported the Apollo 11 space mission which kept the promise of President  Kennedy of putting a man on  the Moon. He covered the fall of two term President Richard M. Nixon,  The Bicentennial of the United States. The Declining economy in 1970’s and early 80’s. The Iranian Hostage Crisis toward the end of his career at CBS News.

In 1972 Good Housekeeping  Magazine named Cronkite “The most trusted in America” for his journalistic endevors.

In 1981 Walter Cronkite retired from the anchor desk at CBS News but he anchored and hosted documentaries for various broadcast and cable networks including CBS , and PBS just to name a few.

He did just covered the news he gave the analysis that viewing public came to expect Cronkite, Commentaries on The Kennedy Assassination, My-Li massacre in Vietnam, Watergate Scandal; The economy, international events and of course the variety of civil rights events: of Blacks, Latinos, Women, Gays, etc.

Cronkite is  survived by his Children, Nancy Cronkite, Kathy  Cronkite and Walter (Chip)Cronkite III

CBS News has extensive coverage of the life and career of Walter Cronkite.

Walter Cronkite was the Platinum Standard in Television News.  In a era where there was little bells that we come to expect. He was a straight shooter no nonsense man that is missing today. Anyone under 35 years old  would not know who Cronkite was. He was your uncle  telling stories of the day, providing information, making you think on the events that shape two generations.  Today anchors are vapid, not versatile in experience; prompter readers. Very few enterprise their own stories.   And with a myriad of  networks CBS, ABC and NBC have lost viewers since Cronkite retirement.  News has become partisan, I mean Hyper-partisan;.and unrecognizable broadcast journalism industry to him and his generation of newsmen and newswomen that came  before.

Farewell Mr. Cronkite, thank you presenting the news the way it was for 50 years.
